Published November 1899, although
dated 1900, Freud considered Die Traumdeutung the most significant of
all his works. “Insight such as this
falls to one’s lot but once in a lifetime”, he wrote. Although only 351 copies were sold during the first six years
after publication, the book was widely noted in at least eleven specialist
journals, and marked the beginning of a broader understanding of modern
psychoanalysis. "This
is unquestionably Freud's greatest single work.” (PMM, p. 234).
